Dutchmaster

I think it's been like 3 or more years since I had a new Wacom tablet. Painter certainly feels better...though Photoshop still gives me chunky lines with the Intuos 3. May have to sort out some settings.
Kind of looks like a wounded sort doesn't he?

Workmen's Guilt

When you're slammed with work it's hard to feel good about drawing for fun. You feel like your time is not your time but it's those with whom you're contracted to that own your time. Even still, there are personal projects that take priority over drawing for fun, and that can be unfortunate.
So when I can't sleep, like right this moment, and because I'm thinking about all the other projects that get me excited to work on, I end up goofing off under the cover of night on cat feet.
Now it'd be different if I was getting paid to do my personal projects...or would it. I mean you'll always have projects.
Some of my best work is because I should be working on something else. But when you work for yourself, you're only knee-capping your free time, your fun time.
Well, I'm not totally blown out yet...maybe I can ink a few storyboards and call it a night...er morning.

OL: On Location

So an audio engineer friend of mine plays in this band. He'd played in several others before, each with a unique and varied sound. This one by far is my favorite. What they have together is a rich chemistry of sounds that are quite unique to them. Of course his earlier band, The Nebraska Bushpullers, were equally unique. This music somehow wraps your head in a blanket of wit and warm rhythms of an unpretentious existential nature. At first listening you'd think it's world music, but it's not, it's something else the world could use a lot more of, originality.

New Paintings

Am I back painting regularly, not so much? I am trying some things when and where I can with varying results. I did a week long intensive in LaConner with Henry [Stinson]. That was a great kick in the butt, however having lost some ground only managed to keep me making common mistakes.

These last two I'd categorize more like illustration. While I shot location reference for these, most of the color building was in the studio. The difference is you can linger when making color choices, and you're not overwhelmed by your surroundings. It can be a good thing though. For instance, because of the drought we've had, the park image below browned out in like a weeks time after I had collected my reference. Still it was a good exercise and it helped me to play and understand light out of my head. Though I'd prefer to paint on location.

NORTH COUNTRY: STILL AVAILABLE!

NORTH COUNTRY the graphic novel is still available from NBM publishing. It came out a year ago this month. Get in on the rollicking adventures of my disturbed youth growing up in the no man's land of New York State!
Hilarity does not ensue, but then again, it'll make your life seem that much funnier. :)

Not Mine Either

Had a couple of minutes to throw down an alternate sketch of a character that a couple of friends of mine are bringing to fruition. While it wasn't asked for I have tendency to see how I might handle a character differently. It's always easier to analyze something that's you have no attachment too. It's also easier to chop, hack and refit things that make more sense to you without knowing the backstory. Though...that in itself can be a downfall.
Regardless it's fun.
